World Meteorological Day

On March 23rd it was World Meteorological Day which is an annual event that is put on by the World Meteorological Organization which was originally the International Meteorological Organization circa 1873. The WHO formed on March 23rd in 1950 and first initiated World Meteorological Day in 1961.

Each year world Meteorological day has a different set theme. The 2015 theme is "Climate knowledge for climate action." The goal of this years theme is to provide opportunity to take stock of climate knowledge built upon from past decades creating an essential base & to support this path towards more ambitious action to address climate change & climate variability.

World Meteorological Day works in tandem to create public awareness of the vital contributions the WHO makes in that of the safety and well being of society in regards to providing meteorological & Hydrologicial services in order to protect life & property from Weather related Natural disasters, climate & water, safe guarding the environment and contributing to development that is sustainable.

Knowledge
Natural climate variability brings benefits and risks for people, communities and economies. Short term and seasonal climate variability is continually being impacted & modified by human induced climate change which results in rising temperatures, changing weather patterns, and rising sea levels.

Action
You can take part in World Meteorological Day by joining in the call and helping create more Climate Knowledge & create awareness for climate action. Taking part is as easy as using the hashtag #WorldMetDay on Twitter - @WMOnews and Facebook - World Meteorological Organization

What you can do to help

The scientific evidence confirms that climate change is caused by overloading our atmosphere with greenhouse gases from burning fossil fuels.  We need to significantly reduce the amount of heat-trapping emissions by burning less fossil fuel, investing in clean and renewable energy, and reducing tropical deforestation.
One of the easiest ways to reduce our carbon footprint is to take notice of, adapt or all together change the choices we make daily such as how we choose to get around place to place, the food we eat, how and where we live. We can make the conscious effort to adopt a Responsible lifestyle
What can you do?
  • Use more environmentally friendly transportation methods such as walking, riding bicycles, or using Public transport in lieu of driving a car. Or changing the type of vehicle we use to get around in - such as driving a fuel efficient car or using an electric car.
  • Try to limit air travel.
  • Be energy efficient: Such as lowering the heating in your home by home by 2° in the winter and reduce air conditioning by 2° in the summer, and even just  turning  off lights and computers when you are not using them, or doing things such as taking shorter showers & limiting our water consumption.
