Media Week

The "press week" started On July 29th
On Wednesday July 29th Viveka Jensen and I headed off to our first "media" interview, of which we will be attending through out the 29th until August 4th.
This is in an effort to promote the British Columbia Ambassador Program as well as talk about our time spent and our experiences as BC Ambassador candidates. It was also a time to discuss what it was like representing Osoyoos for a second time as we had both reigned as Princesses of Osoyoos, with my own reign lasting from 2008 until 2010 and Viveka's reign taking place from 2013-2014.
Our first interview on July 29th was with Community Information Radio Osoyoos on 106.5 FM  with Randy Bedard at the radio station located within Destination Osoyoos. Unfortunately due to technical difficulties the interviews had to be postponed and completed separately versus together.

The Following Day on  July 30th we visited the Osoyoos Times for an interview and a photo op. Just before we leave for Merritt we will be talking to Randy Farmer with EZ Rock Osoyoos on August 4th.

Previously we completed an interview with Osoyoos Daily News and Ripples Publishing online magazine.

Celebrating McHappy Day

On May 6th. 2015 McDonald's Canada Restaurants  celebrated their Annual McHappy Day
So I headed over to the McDonalds in Osoyoos to celebrate my inner Child with a Happy Meal to support their McHappy Day.

For those who don't know McHappy Day supports Ronald McDonald House Charities Canada which are places where families with very sick children can stay. Ronald McDonald House strives to provide a Home away from Home type atmosphere for those who use the services they provide.

I have had family and Friends stay at the Ronald McDonald House in Vancouver!

Another thing I did was purchase a Ronald McDonald Support Shoe where I got to write down my name and the McDonald's will be posting it up on the walls inside the restaurant! I must say it's kind of difficult to write my full name & my title of BC Ambassador Candidate aka Chelsea Cameron-Horner BC Ambassador Candidate because all together it takes up a LOT OF ROOM. #LongNameproblems

Anyway I thoroughly enjoyed my kid's burger with extra pickles and was happy to support a worthy cause! I hope that all of you took part in McHappy Day as well :D

Osoyoos Daffodil Dash

On April 26th the town of Osoyoos was hosting it's first Inaugural Daffodil Dash as a replacement  for the previous Relay for Life events that were held in Osoyoos previously.
Both the Daffodil Dash & the Relay for Life are Fundraising events for the Canadian Cancer Society that are held within a community.

The Relay for life is typically a walk that goes on for a duration of either 24 hours or 12 hours and teams that participate have one member who is always out on the track walking during the event.
The Daffodil Dash is a Run where teams or individuals can sign up to either walk or run between 1km, 5 km or 1 km.
All of the money raised at either of these events goes to the Canadian Cancer Society BC & Yukon Division.

The Osoyoos Daffodil Dash  was being held on Sunday April 26th and was an extremely successful first time even with 45 different participants as reported by the Osoyoos Times.  Originally Viveka and I had been planning to attend the event as Volunteers however an unwise shoe choice by both of us at the previous evening's Oyster Festival left us both a little worse for wear.

Instead I made a Monetary Donation and walked a small portion of the track which rang alongside the different but equally stunning walking paths along the shore line of Osoyoos Lake.
It was such a gloriously sunny afternoon and perfect timing for this event!

For those who did not know the Month of April was known as Daffodil Month . Daffodil month is another Canadian Cancer Society initiative and fundraiser where through out the month daffodil flowers and daffodil flower pins are sold by Volunteers across the country. People then wear the pins as an act of solidarity for those whose lives have been impacted by Cancer.
I bought a Pin this year and wore it until it all the petals fell off & then found my old Daffodil Pin which remained on my Banner for the rest of the month.

I myself have had several members of my family be diagnosed with different types of cancer and have lost 4 different beloved members of my family who lost their own battles. Most recently I lost my cousin Laurie on December 31st in 2014. In the past I have always made an effort to go out and support as well as attend different Canadian Cancer Society Fundraisers being held in Osoyoos. My initial volunteering & Fundraising for the Canadian Cancer Society started when I was only 5 years old and I canvassed door to door with my Mom. A Few years ago I raised over $1500 for the Canadian Cancer Society during one of the Relay for Life events that was held in Osoyoos.
So naturally I was quite pleased at the turn out and success of the first ever Daffodil Dash held here in Osoyoos last weekend.

Lastly I would like to commend and congratulate everyone who participated in, volunteered at, or made donations toward this first time event held last weekend! I hope that the Daffodil Dash continues to be a successful fundraiser for the Canadian Cancer Society for many years to come!

MS Fundraiser & BBQ

MS Fundraiser and BBQ

On April 25th I went to the Osoyoos MS Fundraiser and BBQ held at Buy-Low Foods - Osoyoos. There was quite a bit going on at the BBQ including 50/50 tickets, a raffle draw and of course the delicious Hamburgers & Hot Dogs that were for sale.

In the picture Above I am standing with the MS Group members & the chef of the afternoon. I have been attending this annual BBQ for several years now, even attending it as an Osoyoos Princess. So I was very happy to be able to attend as a British Columbia Ambassador Candidate.

For those that don't know May is MS Awareness Month. So that is what the proceeds of the BBQ is going towards!

Osoyoos Autism Behavioural Centre's Walk for Awareness

On April 18th I attended the Osoyoos Autism Behavioral Centre and Society's Walk for Awareness and family friendly celebrations. I unfortunately was not able to make it for the actual walk portion of the afternoon but  I did spend a fair bit of time at the Celebration portion of the afternoon which was held at the Sonora Community Centre. It's kind of hard to explain in a way but it was almost like an indoor family fun carnival with a live band, face painting, a fun zone set up for the kids in the center of the room and lot's of goodies and snacks to eat.

By the time I arrived the afternoon was in full swing and I saw many happy children playing and just having a total blast. Meanwhile I took the time to visit the different information booths and learn more about the event as well as Autism in general. One of the groups I spoke to included Bikers For Autism who were attending from the Vancouver area.

I am happy to say that in my opinion the event was a huge success and I just want to commend everyone who was involved. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing so much joy and happiness at an event aimed to raise awareness. I even picked up a handmade Autism pin from the Osoyoos Autism Behavioral Centre and Society - it was a hand painted puzzle piece. I plan to keep it on my Banner until the end of the Month since April is Autism awareness month.

I would again like to commend the Osoyoos Autism Behavioral Centre and Society on hosting such a successful event. I have total faith that they will continue to provide great services for the community of Osoyoos!

My Experiences with V Day Oliver-Osoyoos and the Vagina Monologues

My Experiences with V Day and the Vagina Monologues

I first had heard about the Vagina Monologues from my fellow South Okanagan Amateur Players  co-star from the Musical I was in this past fall - Nunset Boulevard. She was a producer for the Vagina Monologues and had worked on V Day Oliver-Osoyoos  theatrical productions since the group first began in 2013 with their first production of the Vagina Monologues.

Just the word Vagina freaked me out and I had no CLUE what the Vagina Monologues were event about. After looking over the script I decided to go out to the December Auditions and read for my Short Skirt in particular because it was the piece that I felt most comfortable with.

The Audition process itself was fairly different from a typical SOAP  Audition. It was a private session where I read for the Director And my friend (from SOAP) who was the producer. Where as in SOAP auditions you typically do a cold reading of the script in a board room setting where they have you read for multiple parts through out the audition. For example they would say okay you, you and you read for these parts up to Page or Line #... So it was fairly interesting to go through a different process all together.

From my understanding nearly everyone who read for a part was brought onto the 2015 Vagina Monologues cast. We began rehearsals late January and it wasn't a fully attended rehearsal however it was intimidating all the same. I had found out that a vast majority of the cast had been involved in the previous V Day Oliver-Osoyoos productions and most of them had been a part of the original VM cast and were doing monologues they had previously performed.

In the fall playing Sister Amnesia in SOAP's production of Nunset Boulevard was my first principal role with the group and since we had such a small cast (5 of us) and I very much the rookie I felt immense pressure to do my home work. I looked up everything I could find about the previous Nunset Musicals and did major amounts of script work.
This was a practice I carried onto the Vagina Monologues. I learned that they first started in 1996 when the playwright Eve Ensler  spent time talking to and interviewing hundreds of women from all walks of life. The Vagina Monologues became the corner stone and spark that started the V Day Movement  which is a Global Initiative to end violence against women whilst actively raising awareness around issues women face.  So I found out that the Vagina Monologues and in Paticular the V Day group was about so much more than a simply putting on a Play.

I quickly became an active member of the local V Day group including attending Meetings & volunteering at the One Billion Rising Art show And auction fundraiser we hosted in March.  I thrilled to have joined such a welcoming, supporting, and encouraging local organization. I was instantly welcomed into the cast and the group and was utterly awe inspired by how much enthusiasm, dedication, and over all motivation seen within the group and cast to ultimately showcase the Message of V Day  which is to never stop raising awareness for violence against Women "Until the Violence stops."

Once I made the choice to officially enter the British Columbia Ambassador Program and represent my home town of Osoyoos  as a candidate in the 2015 program Chelsea Cameron-Horner: British Columbia Ambassador Candidate 2015 I gained instant support from the group. And I was even recognized for my achievement at the last Rehearsal before our Stage rehearsals leading up to the show.

On April 7th we had the first of our on Stage Rehearsals and we endured the Tech Rehearsal. Tech is always a pretty interesting affair since it requires a lot of patience as well as concentration. This is because a tech rehearsal can go a number of ways sometimes they are only cue to cue while other times it's the full production. For the first part of the rehearsal we were basically running most of the play whilst our Sound & lighting people were experimenting with the Lights and music. After about the first hour we were asked to start again and go only cue to cue while lights and music was all sorted out and finalized.

The next day was our full dress rehearsal and we nailed it. I was fully dressed with hair & makeup and was even allowed to wear my banner to use it as an opportunity to have some extra stage practice. It actually really seemed to make a huge different to me personally as I seemed to take my time on stage more seriously. Which was a good thing because as a cast we were actually on stage the entire time and would have planned movements from seat to seat between monologues.

On the two nights of our Performance we were sort of sharing the space with a Pow Wow which was being held in the gym kiddie corner to the theatre. So during our actual performances they had little signs posted through out the Theatre and the gym space like the one below. It wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. The sound wasn't as loud as I had first estimated it would be. So I was quite happy about that. The only difficult challenge about the Pow Wow was that it meant we could not use the bathroom backstage as cast members since the exit door opened out into the area where the Pow Wow was being held.

I was actually given the opportunity to attend the Vagina Monologues as both a member of the group and cast as well as a British Columbia Ambassador Candidate. This invitation was also extended to Viveka Who is also a candidate from Osoyoos. So during the Friday and Saturday Night performances we had a little table set up and acted like Greeters standing by the door and welcoming people to the show. Viveka attended the friday night performance where we were able to present a donation to the Chair and Co Chair of the group.

Viveka and I have decided to use the opportunity as British Columbia Ambassador Program Candidates to give back to our community. We plan to do this by volunteering at events as well as  spotlighting groups and local charities and giving small donations to them from money we raise  during our fundraisers for the British Columbia Ambassador Program. Of course we will always focus on giving a vast majority of the money we raise back to the BCAP program and it in turns go back to us through scholarships and bursaries.

During the Friday night performance we didn't have an overly huge crowd but that is always nice because it can be intimidating to perform for the first time in front of large audiences. Viveka actually stayed and watched the show and she really enjoyed it and said it was "nothing like [She] Expected it to be." Which is always a nice thing to hear. After the show we as a cast went and interacted with the crowd where I once again joined Viveka wearing my Banner. Viveka and I were both super lucky because during the Friday night performance we each won a door prize donated by one of the 2015 V Day Beneficiaries  the Okanagan Nation Emergency Transition House. I've already eaten the cookies & they were delicious!

During both of the performances there were booths set up by each of the different V Day 2015 Beneficiaries through out the lobby.

On Saturday night Viveka could not attend. However I'm happy to say that there were FAR more PEOPLE in attendance at that show!!! I figured well over 80 people were sitting in the audience during our performance. Once again when doors opened I hung around in the Lobby greeting people.
Hanging out by the front table as well as the table we set up for our British Columbia Ambassador posters.

During the Saturday night performance they announced the Winners of the 2015 V Day Raffle and one winner was even in attendance to be able to come up on stage to claim her prize. I feel that over all our Saturday night performance was Brilliant and I myself was the best during that show. I am truly happy to have taken part in the 2015 V Day Campaign and look forward to taking part in the 2016 V Day Oliver-Osoyoos Campaign. Here are some more photos of the show
